STORY CREATION

OVERVIEW

The Faculty of Engineering at The University of New South Wales is home to the world’s leading researchers, technologists, and world-builders. Their collective impact extends to every corner of the globe – shaping foundational industries such as energy, water, food, healthcare, and manufacturing as well as future industries such as decarbonisation, nuclear fusion, quantum computing, and generative artificial intelligence.

Following a recent school identity and positioning project, the faculty needed a new web research experience to consolidate its strategy and share its unique perspective as a diverse collective of fearless thinkers changing the world.

WHAT WE DELIVERED

TONE OF VOICE

This project started with the creation of a Tone of Voice Guide for the faculty that allowed them to express their own unique personality while still adhering to the overall brand guidelines of the university. Providing the faculty with a crystal-clear voice that unified their diverse collective of researchers and their impactful work, we explored this within with the faculty’s core idea of ‘Technology for Humanity’.

IMPACT STORIES

Following the tone of voice creation, we were tasked with writing 20 individual impact stories that shared the far-reaching outcomes of the work being done within the faculty. This included interviews with 20 leading academics, extensive research into various fields of engineering as well as extensive subediting, proofreading and liaison with the wider faculty team members.

With a readership consisting of existing and prospective research partners as well as current and future students, each story needed to be expressed through a lens of opportunity and embrace a clear call to action.

RESULT

Through the creation of a tone of voice guide, storytelling guidelines and 20 individual impact stories, we were able to build on existing strengths within the faculty’s broader story to provide greater accessibility and visibility of research opportunities for all members of the faculty. In doing so, we challenged misconceptions about UNSW Engineering and provided a clear pathway for the expression of future stories with impact.

This work not only helped close the knowledge gap between research and impact, it has enabled a new sense of pride and ownership within the faculty to drive richer conversations and deeper storytelling for continued future innovation.
